Following my graduation with an Bachelor of Music (Boston University 1963) and then observing the liberal arts as an instructor (Brown University, 1971-1975) I am currently strongly devoted to the integrated method of learning which includes studying the arts in conjunction with other disciplines. This is not a surprise since an ethnomusicologist who has a PhD as well as an MA from UCLA is enthusiastic about the arts. The ethnomusicology course, which began in 1975 at UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is located within the department of music in the College of Letters and Science. It's fun to pursue many areas of interest. I enjoy looking at the larger perspective. It's a pleasure to instruct graduate and undergraduate students. I am the writer of 3 books, Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically as well as Music in Japan, Experiencing music and expressing culture. There are times when I'm primarily a professor, and also other times in where I am involved in administrative tasks (such as chair of the Department of Music, 1983-1988 and the Dean for Undergraduate Advising from 1992 to 1998, as well as the Chair of Deans for the College of Letters and Science from 1994 to 1998).
